Dr. Daria Messina
A 1987 graduate of Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic, Dr. Messina was the recipient of the B.J. Palmer Clinical Excellence Award. In 1990, she was honored as the Sherman College Chiropractic Career Advisor of the Year (along with Dr. Sasso) for her efforts in establishing a pre-chiropractic curriculum at Ocean County College, Toms River, NJ. She is a member of the Garden State Chiropractic Society (GSCS), a state organization in New Jersey. Since 1991, she has been serving as a member of the Board of Directors of the GSCS and was elected vice-president in June 1996.She was then elected president in June 1998 and again in June 2002. Dr. Messina is the first woman to serve as president of the GSCS since its inception.
She has been recognized as an Outstanding Young Women in America and a member of the Distinguished Board of Regents of Sherman College. In 1994, 1999, 2000 and 2004, she was honored as GSCS’ “Chiropractor of the Year”. She is the only female chiropractor, in the state of NJ, to receive this honor from the GSCS and the only individual to be honored four times. She was the recipient of the 1993 “Distinguished Service Award” and honored as “Board Member of the Year” in 1996 by the Garden State Chiropractic Society. In 2000, she was the first woman to be elected a Fellow in the College of Straight Chiropractic (FCSC). She was also the managing editor of the FSCO INSIDER, a national publication from 1995 to 2002. She also holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Seton Hall University.
Not only is Dr. Messina a chiropractor in Toms River, she organizes the childcare program for the local chapter of Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS). She has provided chiropractic adjustments for the core runners of the “Run for the Fallen” and adjusted the first responders, at the command center in Ortley, after Superstorm Sandy.
Dr. Joe Sasso
Dr. Sasso is a 1983 magna-cum-laude graduate of Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic and a member of the Garden State Chiropractic Society. He has served the GSCS as treasurer of both the general organization, its affiliated political action committee and as vice-president. In1988 and 1990, he was honored as GSCS’ “Board Member of the Year” and also received a GSCS“Distinguished Service Award” in 1989. He shared a 1990 Sherman College “Career Advisor of the Year” award with Dr. Messina and was honored as GSCS “Chiropractor of the Year” in 1992. In 1992, he was also honored as a “Distinguished Alumnus” of Sherman College.
From 1991-1995, he was president of the Federation of Straight Chiropractors and Organizations, a national trade association. In this capacity, he spoke before legislative bodies and travelled extensively in addressing chiropractic students nationwide. In 1994, he received the prestigious “TRIUNE Award” from the FSCO for his dedication to the profession and was honored as “Chiropractor of the Year” by Sherman College. In 2000, he was elected a Fellow in the College of Straight Chiropractic.
Dr. Sasso also supports his community and volunteered at a local church and relief center during the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. He is an accomplished guitarist whose talents include performance, arranging and recording.
Dr. Messina and Dr. Sasso have been Toms River chiropractors since 1989 are married and have two children, Joey and Sofia.
